Central academy: STUDENT TEACHING INTERNSHIP
I could not have imagined a better internship than the one I received at Central Academy. After completing a two-week field experience at Central, I was amazed at the philosophies and practices that I witnessed and desperately requested for my placement at Central for student teaching.
Central Academy is a multiage, nongraded school of choice, in which students are placed in classrooms based upon age, rather than grade level. For example, kindergarten and first graders are in Early Primary classrooms, ages 4-7, second and third are in Late Primary, and fourth and fifth grade are in Intermediate. Students are not given letter grades, but narratives which are individually based with personal goals and achievements. Central is committed to a democratic, progressive education.
My placement was in an Early Primary classroom, with twenty four students ranging from 4-7 in age. I student taught from August 2012-December 2012, and began taking lead responsibilities within the first couple of weeks.
Below is a link of Central Academy's website, as well as an excerpt from a book written by Tom Poetter, titled 10 Great Curricula: Lived Conversations of Progressive, Democratic Curricula in School and Society, 2011, in which Central Academy is highlighted in one of the chapters.
